Democrats in the House and Senate said that they would be interested in negotiating on health insurance reform if Republicans are willing to withdraw the proposal to repeal Obamacare.
"If President Trump and Speaker Ryan and Majority Leader McConnell said we are taking repeal off the table, we would have a lot of people willing to sit down and improve the ACA, not repeal it," Sen. Chuck Schumer said at a Tuesday press conference, according to the Washington Examiner.
"I have a lot of ideas, so do many of my colleagues in the House and the Senate. But if you repeal it first you are going to do huge damage and have nothing to replace it with. We are willing to make improvements," Schumer, a New York Democrat and the Senate's minority leader, added.
House minority leader Nancy Pelosi defended Obamacare when asked what compromises she would be wiling to make for the program.
"There hasn't been a perfect bill. We can always subject any legislation we pass to scrutiny in terms of its implementation," the California Democrat said.
Democrats would not provide a single vote in favor of the Republican health plan, the American Health Care Act, Schumer said, according to the Examiner.
At another point during the conference, Schumer said that support for the Republican health plan is collapsing while Democrats are on the same page in opposing it.
"The bill's in trouble. It's in trouble in the House; it's in even more trouble in the Senate; and we Democrats are unified," Schumer said, according to The Hill.
