Obama Super PAC Raises Paltry $59K In January

By    |   Tuesday, 21 February 2012 10:48 AM EST

Priorities USA, the super PAC supporting President Barack Obama, hasn’t exactly started the year off with a bang. It generated only $59,000 in January, much less than any of the super PACs backing Republican presidential candidates, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

By contrast, Winning Our Future, the super PAC supporting Newt Gingrich, garnered more than $11 million in January. Restore Our Future, the super PAC backing Mitt Romney, garnered $6.6 million. And Red White and Blue Fund, the super PAC favoring Rick Santorum, pulled in $2.1 million, Politico reports.

To be sure, until early this month, Obama refused to give his full blessing to Priorities USA, so it was essentially operating with one hand tied behind its back. But with Obama opponents more impassioned than Obama supporters at this point, it may be difficult for Priorities USA to match its Republican rivals in fundraising, even with Obama’s backing.

In January, 85 percent of the super PAC’s funds — $50,000 — came from John Rogers, CEO of Ariel Capital Management, a Chicago-based money management firm. Priorities USA raised $1.2 million in the second half of last year, including a $100,000 donation from movie director Steven Spielberg.
