Obama Gets Free Pass From Media

By    |   Tuesday, 14 October 2008 11:02 AM EDT

Voters are angry. The mainstream media have depicted voter anger in two distinct ways: Republican anger is divisive. Democratic anger is righteous outrage.

One Reuters headline reads, “Republican anger bubbles up at McCain rally.” ABC News writes, “Obama says McCain is Trying to Fuel Anger and Division.” Political chameleon David Gergen is quoted, “I think it’s really imperative that [McCain and Palin] try to calm people down.” Joe Biden says, about voters at McCain-Palin rallies, “this is volatile stuff.”

The distinct ideological slant of the news media isn’t anything new. What is surprising, though, is that they haven’t figured out that, with the new and alternative media, they cannot fool all of the people all of the time. Their credibility has always been lacking. Now it is hyper-exposed.

In a country that is center-right, they have earned the label “dinosaur media.” In this election, though, the media seem incapable of overcoming a self-destructive compulsion to set their political agenda despite the fact that they will be exposed by the new and alternative media.

Because liberals in the news media have never understood the center-right of America, they cannot understand the vocal Republican anger during these later stages of this election.

Despite calls coming in to congressional offices at ratios of about 100-to-1 against the recent $700 billion bailout, Congress voted for the largest act of socialism in America since the FDR years. The media were too busy fawning over Barack Obama and chasing down the politically charged yet meaningless Palin “troopergate” story to notice that it was Washington’s policies that caused the subprime mortgage fiasco, which has caused a stock market crash.

Americans are angry, and rightfully so. They’ve been angry with Washington politicians and the establishment media that help prop up big government. With voters now seeing through their bias for Obama and prejudice against mainstream Americans (especially with their transparent personal attacks on Sarah Palin, with whom many Americans can identify), the thin-skinned media act as though they’ve been accosted by Republican voters.

While the mainstream media report about angry voters at McCain and Palin rallies, they have not merely neglected the hateful comments from the left, but the top-down vitriol from leaders of the Democratic Party itself. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

The House banking committee chairman, Barney Frank, who was literally in bed with Fannie Mae, has been deemed blameless for his role in contributing to the largest economic collapse of our time. Yet, when he said that those who now want to hold him accountable are guilty of racism — an outrageous charge — the dinosaur media never called it what it is: outrageous.

In July this year, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issued a fundraising appeal in which Paul Begala wrote: “Apparently, it didn't take long for the "Grand Oil Party" to come unglued. After I called their fat-cat funders a bunch of dirtbags in my email to you on Sunday, they started squealing like a pig stuck under a gate.

“House Republicans are crying so hard over my ‘dirtbag’ comment, you'd think they just found out they were forced to spend the Fourth of July quail-hunting with Dick Cheney.

“So I want to take a minute to do something I don't do often enough: apologize. I am very sorry for calling those fat-cat plutocrat Republicans ‘dirtbags.’ Doing so was grossly unfair. To bags of dirt. After all, dirt is good.

“Things grow from the dirt. I myself raise tomatoes and corn and pumpkins, jalapenos and cucumbers and lettuce — all from the good earth.

“No, it was too kind, too generous to call them dirtbags. Probably better to call them oilbags or toxic-waste-bags or chemical-pollutant-bags. So I'm sorry.”

Democratic leaders engage — in their official capacity, I might add — in these vile attacks without ever being called on the carpet by the news media. Instead of criticizing official Democratic hate mongering, the media instead focus on angry voter sentiments at Republican rallies in an obvious attempt to create fear and prejudice among their readers. And too often they carelessly mimic, without the least worry of fact checking, unfounded charges coming from left-wing blogs.

When McCain and Palin rallies are broadcast, we hear the patriotic chant of “U-S-A,” which is remarkably absent from what we hear at Obama and Biden rallies. There’s anger on both sides, but what the dinosaur media has chosen to report versus what not to report makes Republicans even angrier as they learn facts from the new and alternative media that show the political affiliation between the left and the major media.

It isn’t merely that the press hasn’t questioned Sen. Obama’s extremely liberal policy positions. It never investigated thoroughly his political-development associations with highly questionable figures. For someone who wants to be president, Obama has gotten pillow treatment.

Obama’s political career was launched in the living room of the most famous terrorist in America, Bill Ayers, who also handpicked Obama to distribute $50 million to “raise political consciousness” under the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. When National Review Online writer Stanley Kurtz sought access to records about all this lodged at the Richard J. Daly Library, he was denied access. If the subject of Mr. Kurtz’s research had been a Republican, rest assured legions of lawyers from big media would have filed suits galore.

Obama’s pastor of 20 years said in his church, “God damn America.” His biggest initial financial backer was convicted felon, Tony Rezko. Obama skates.

Despite Obama’s brief tenure in the U.S. Senate, he was the third-largest recipient of political contributions from Fannie Mae, which, we are coming to learn, was not merely corrupt, but was a principal cause of the long-brewing financial meltdown. In the case Buycks-Roberson v. Citibank, he even litigated to force banks to issue the types of bad loans that are center stage in the mortgage fiasco. Obama glides.

He trained organizers for, and litigated voter registration on behalf of, the left-wing and scruples-challenged ACORN. Despite ACORN’s 25-year history with charges of voter fraud, the Obama campaign hired an ACORN affiliate to do voter registration.

Now, we learn that ACORN appears to be involved with massive voter fraud in at least five battleground states. Who’s calling out Obama on his ties to ACORN?

These and many facts have gone completely or largely unpursued by the dinosaur media. The media was content blaming the financial collapse on Wall Street, the free market, and Republicans. But the media failed to investigate and follow leads showing that their candidate was involved in a reckless, and now failed, political-economic system up to his eyeballs.

The McCain-Palin campaign is forced to go on the attack in the final weeks of the election, partly as the result of Sen. McCain’s own folly. Conservatives have always known that the media doesn’t present the news fairly, and the McCain-Feingold law severely hampered the ability of independent groups from being factual pit bulls, saying those things that were normally thought too “hot” for presidential campaigns to say.

Republican anger at McCain and Palin rallies is partly the result of a lack of sources willing to examine the facts about how big government and the Washington establishment caused the current turmoil.

The dinosaur media continue to give Obama a pass on how he was not merely a part of the problem, but that his policies seem to be more of what got us here.

Fortunately, the new and alternative media — talk radio, the Internet, etc. — are vigilant about what the establishment media does. Conservatives sit in wonderment about when the dinosaur media will catch on to the fact that over 50 percent of the American public get their political news from the new and alternative media, and they are no longer the only game in town.

Richard A. Viguerie is founder of FedUp.org, and has been named “one of the creators of the modern conservative movement” (The Nation magazine), and one of 2008’s “top 25 influencers” among Republicans (Newsmax magazine).
