Magic Johnson Helps Obama Raise West Coast Funds

By    |   Monday, 25 November 2013 03:28 PM EST

President Barack Obama is taking a break from his troubled healthcare program and other pressing matters in the nation's capital for a fundraising swing along the West Coast, where he'll rub elbows with Magic Johnson and other wealthy donors.

Bloomberg reports that Obama will make fundraising stops at the former NBA player's Los Angeles home as well as the Seattle home of former Microsoft executive Jon Shirley.

A total of seven events during the three-day fundraising spree that began Monday are designed to help elect more Democrats to the House and Senate during the 2014 midterm elections, and in turn help the president pass his agenda through Congress.

Democratic supporters will pay up to $32,000 to attend the parties, where the president is expected to give speeches on immigration and the economy.

Some of the events will include an appearance by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, as well as media executive Haim Saban, chairman of the Spanish-language channel Univision.

"The biggest barrier, impediment, we have right now is a Congress and in particular a House of Representatives that is not focused on getting the job done for the American people but is a lot more focused on trying to position themselves for the next election or defeating my agenda," Obama told donors at one event.

The Washington Times reported that Obama will mingle with Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks studio, and that this week's events make a total of 17 fundraisers the president has held this month to help pay off the Democratic National Committee's $16 million debt from the 2012 presidential election.
