South Dakota GOP Calls for Obama's Impeachment

By    |   Sunday, 22 June 2014 05:56 PM EDT

The South Dakota Republican Party state convention voted to call for the impeachment of President Barack Obama, saying he has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways."

The resolution passed Saturday by the convention cites Obama's release of five Taliban prisoners in a swap for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, Obama's broken promise that people could keep their insurance under the Affordable Care Act, and regulations of power plants by the Environmental Protection Agency.

"I've got a thick book on impeachable offenses of the president," Allen Unruh of Sioux Falls said, according to the Argus Leader. He asked South Dakota to "send a symbolic message that liberty shall be the law of the land."

Not everyone agreed, including delegate David Wheeler, who argued that the power of impeachment should not be used for political purposes.

"By doing this, we would look petty, like we can't achieve our political goals through the political process," Wheeler said.

Larry Eliason also voted against the resolution even though, he said, "the only thing [Obama's] done the last six years that I approve of is when he adopted a pet."

Larry Klipp spoke in favor of the resolution, telling delegates, "If anyone in this room cannot see the horrendous, traitorous scandals run by the Obama administration, I will pray for you."

The resolution passed 191-176.

South Dakota Democrats blasted the resolution, calling on the state's one Republican senator, John Thune and its lone member of the House, Rep. Kristi Noem, to condemn the resolution, KSFY-TV reported.

Noem's spokeswoman Brittany Comins told the Argus Leader that the congresswoman doesn't think impeachment is the proper route.

"The congresswoman currently believes the best way for Congress to hold the president accountable is to continue aggressive committee oversight and investigations into the administration's actions like the ongoing VA scandal, the targeting of conservative groups by the IRS, Benghazi, and the recent Taliban prisoner exchange," Comins said.
