The National Republican Congressional Committee has opened a field office in Southern California as it gets set to fight for the GOP's control of the House, the Washington Examiner reports.

The NRCC has leased an office in Irvine, California. The area had once been considered prime Republican territory, but Democrats have made inroads, according to the Examiner.

Now the NRCC is sending staffers with expertise in field organizing, fundraising and political strategy to the office while they target races from the Central Valley to San Diego.

"This move allows us to harness and grow what's already a strong base of support in Southern California said Rep. Steve Stivers of Ohio, chairman of the NRCC.

"Our long-term physical presence in the area signifies how important our California members are to our conference. We believe this will help supplement their strong campaigns in 2018 and beyond."

The NRCC's lease for the office runs through 2020 and indicates a commitment by the group extending beyond this year's midterm elections, the Examiner reported.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee is set to deploy more staffers on the ground in key races that it has at this stage in any election year.

The RNC's field program will be adding 170 permanent staffers by the end of the month —bringing the total number to over 300. Another 200 more staffers will be brought on before the summer, NBC News reported.
