Rep. Martha McSally: 'The Pressure Has Worked' on North Korea

By    |   Friday, 08 June 2018 03:18 PM EDT

U.S. efforts to exert pressure on North Korea have worked to push North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to negotiate over denuclearization, said Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., a member of the House Armed Services Committee.

“I am so proud of our troops. They are ready to fight tonight, and that is one of the reasons I think the pressure has worked… if needed, we will use military action in order to make sure that they don’t have a nuclear weapon that can hold an American city hostage,” McSally said Friday on Fox News’ "America’s Newsroom."

"I think that’s what’s brought us to this moment, plus the maximum pressure campaign with the sanctions," McSally added.

“The president has made it clear that we will not tolerate them having a nuclear weapon,” McSally said, adding that removing U.S. troops would not be on the table in a deal with North Korea.

"Nothing has changed right now as far as the actual threat… they could hit Seoul (South Korea) with 250,000 artillery pieces in 24 hours, so we need a change, a real change; inspections that are intrusive, and to have that path to denuclearization before there’s any discussion about that, in my view," McSally said in the Fox News interview.

"There’s an opportunity here for Kim. It’s all up to Kim whether he’s going to choose another path," McSally said.

On Thursday, Trump said that he plans to submit any future North Korea deal to the Senate as a treaty, as a method to ensure Kim that the agreement is permanent.
