Hasan Harnett was elected chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party this weekend in a surprise upset over a candidate backed by Gov. Pat McCrory and the GOP establishment.
Harnett defeated Craig Collins,
WRAL.com reports.
No official vote count was announced, but WRAL reported that the roll call from the state's 100 counties recorded 700 votes for Harnett and 562 for Collins.
Harnett, a businessman and author from Concord, was campaign manager for GOP congressional candidate Vince Coakley's unsuccessful bid last year in a heavily Democrat district, reports
The News & Observer of Raleigh.
Harnett said he can expand the GOP’s appeal to minorities, The News & Observer reported.
"If you can raise money in that district, you can raise money anywhere," Harnett said. "We need a bold, reinvigorated Republican Party who listens to the grass roots. Together we will win in 2016 because teamwork makes the dream work."
