The majority of voters in New Jersey support legalizing small amounts of marijuana for an adult's personal use, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University.
Most voters support legalization, with young people being far more likely than the middle-aged or elderly:
- Voters who support legalization: 62 percent.
- Voters who oppose: 33 percent.
- Voters under 34: 90 percent support legalization; 10 percent oppose.
- Voters age 35-49: 65 percent support; 29 percent oppose.
- Voters age 50-64: 63 percent support; 33 percent oppose.
- Voters age 65 and over: 46 percent support; 47 percent oppose.
The support for erasing criminal records for marijuana possession follows a similar pattern, though support for the sale of marijuana in local communities has yet to reach the same level:
- Voters on erasing criminal records: 63 percent support; 27 percent oppose.
- Voters of supporting sale of marijuana in their community: 50 percent support; 45 percent oppose.
Quinnipiac University polled 908 New Jersey voters by phone from Aug. 15-20 with a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points.
