The GOP's only female presidential candidate thus far, Carly Fiorina, should tone down her attacks on Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, says former presidential aide Nicole Wallace in an interview with
Politico.
The co-host of ABC's "The View" said Fiorina, a former Hewlett-Packard CEO, should go after liberal issues rather than adopting what has thus far been a one-note message against Clinton, which pits women against women, Politico said.
"She runs the risk of having it look personal," said Wallace, who worked with both George W. Bush and Jeb Bush, and who is promoting a new novel,
"Madame President."
"But it’s certainly up to her, if she thinks she’s found her niche as the No. 1 Hillary Clinton critic, I’m sure she’ll get a lot of attention," Wallace allowed of Fiorina's current strategy.
Fiorina, a political outsider, announced her White House bid on May 5,
CNN reported. She told the cable network in an interview that Clinton was "not trustworthy."
But even before she formally stepped into the race, the tech executive was going after the former secretary of state, largely seen as the Democrat's top candidate for 2016.
"Mrs. Clinton, name an accomplishment," Fiorina told attendees at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in February,
Time magazine reported.
She followed up after Clinton announced she was entering the Democratic race via video in April with another slap: "She’s not the woman for the White House," Fiorina said.
Wallace, however, told Politico she wasn't sure Fiorina's tactics would gain traction.
"Her role in the Republican field has been to be the most sort of strident critic of Hillary Clinton’s, which is interesting to me as well. Why does that fall to a woman?" Wallace said in an interview with Politico chief political correspondent Glenn Thrush for a podcast.
"You know, I don’t want to be the chick police," Wallace said, "but I think that Carly will go far by broadening the attack to everything that’s wrong with the liberal approach as opposed to being the thorn in Hillary Clinton’s side."
