Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich called on the Democrat mayor of Washington, D.C., to "get control on her streets," after activists clashed with supporters of President Donald Trump after the Million MAGA March in the city Saturday.

Gingrich added, during an interview on Fox News' "America's Newsroom," that Mayor Muriel Bowser should be "put on notice" and if she can't keep the city under control, then the "issue of home rule ought to be revisited."

He also accused because Black Lives Matter and antifa of waging the "first really continuing street war in modern American history ... no one has to tolerate this. Look at Portland, where this I think it’s going on 150 days now."

If presumptive president-elect Joe Biden's election is certified, the violence against Republicans won't slow down, said Gingrich, now a contributor for Fox News.

"Between Black Lives Matter and antifa, you now have the first really continuing street war in modern American history," said Gingrich.

"The left might have gone crazy if Trump had gotten reelected, but nobody on the hard left is going to be nice because Biden is president. They’re going to exploit every weakness," said Gingrich. "The violence is going to get worse. "

Gingrich said he finds it "sobering" to think that in his own country, he could have "somebody break into a restaurant or attack me on the street. I think this is a real threat to America as a country.”

But, he pointed out that the mainstream media has reported little about the violent acts that took place after the march, and said that antifa is continuing to become "better financed and more dangerous.

"What you are seeing happen is a fight for control of the streets, just as you are seeing a fight for control of newsrooms, a fight for control of the colleges," said Gingrich. "The left is on offense and if they can, they say this openly, if they can, they intend to hunt down and eliminate every conservative and cost them their jobs."

Such violence, he added, "is really dangerous and frankly reminiscent of Germany in the 20s when the Nazis and Communists fought huge street battles to see who would dominate the streets."
