New York GOP Rep. Bob Turner, who won a special election for disgraced former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner’s seat last year, announced Tuesday that he is joining the race to oppose Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand this year.
Turner’s House seat probably will be eliminated in redistricting,
Politico reports. Two other Republicans already are campaigning to challenge the vulnerable Gillibrand. That includes Wendy Long, a New York City-based judicial activist who has received support from Mike Long, powerful chairman of the state Conservative Party who is no relation to Wendy Long.
Turner issued a statement Tuesday stating, "I will travel to the Republican State Convention in Rochester later this week and humbly ask for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate. I will respectfully ask for the Conservative nomination a few days later at that Party's convention.”
Turner has received an endorsement from David Malpass, head of GrowPac and an unsuccessful candidate in the Republican Senate primary for the 2010 special election won by Gillibrand. “We are very pleased to endorse Bob Turner for the United States Senate,” Malpass said in a statement. “Sen. Gillibrand has worked for Washington’s interests, even as New York has suffered from high unemployment and taxes and the sense that government is not serving the people effectively.”
