New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signed legislation Monday that will let jail inmates phone for free — the first big city in the nation to do so, The New York Times reported.
The city had been collecting about $5 million a year from calls made by inmates and their families, the news outlet reported.
The new law goes into effect in 270 days.
The move is part of a nationwide push by prison reformers to limit private companies from profiting off incarceration, the Times reported.
