House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said that Republicans are the majority party in the House and Senate, so they need to get to work on a plan to handle the government's debt ceiling.
"With so much at stake for hard-working families, Republicans need to stop the chaos and sort themselves out in a hurry," Pelosi said Thursday in a statement on her website.
"With the White House, House and Senate under one party control, the American people expect and deserve a plan from Republicans to avert a catastrophic default and ensure the full faith and credit of the United States," Pelosi added.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin set a Sept. 29 deadline for raising the debt ceiling. Without raising the ceiling, the U.S. Treasury will not be able to make U.S. government payments, which could result in a government shutdown or could cause the U.S. credit rating to drop, according to The Hill.
President Donald Trump said in two Thursday tweets that the debt ceiling issue should have already been resolved.
