Democrats Wonder: Is Pelosi Friend or Foe?

By    |   Monday, 06 February 2012 02:54 PM EST

In the 2010 congressional elections, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi made a perfect piñata for Republican candidates. They blasted out $75 million worth of negative ads against her that helped the GOP regain control of the House, Politico reports.

The question now is whether she’ll do more to help Democrats — and be more of an asset than liability — this time around. She has receded from the spotlight, raised about $25 million for fellow Democrats, and moved to mend fences with moderates in her party.

But some moderate Democrats remain concerned that Pelosi will hurt them – so much so that three of the four leaders of the moderate Democratic Blue Dog Coalition have decided to retire at the end of this year. The latest among them is Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., who received a thrashing when he ran against Pelosi for House Minority Leader after last year’s elections.
