President Donald Trump is “a racist,” NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson told CNN in response to Trump’s comments about immigrants coming to the U.S. from “shithole countries.”
"We just have to be careful not to get so caught up in his words," Johnson told CNN's Erin Burnett on Friday. "We know he's a racist, he's demonstrated that."
In bluntly vulgar language, Trump on Thursday questioned why the U.S. would accept more immigrants from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa rather than places like Norway, as he rejected a bipartisan immigration deal.
The White House did not deny his remark but issued a statement saying Trump supports immigration policies that welcome "those who can contribute to our society."
Johnson also said he didn’t understand comments made by Isaac Newton Farris Jr., Martin Luther King Jr.’s nephew, calling Trump “racially ignorant and racially uninformed” but not a “racist in the traditional sense.
"I don't understand what it means to be not a racist in the traditional sense," Johnson said. "A racist is a racist in all sense of the word. And how one displays their racism is a problem no matter what."
