Chuck Todd: Hillary Feels Poor Hanging Out With Millionaires

Tuesday, 10 June 2014 01:01 PM EDT

MSNBC host Chuck Todd is wondering if Hillary Clinton has lost touch with average Americans by saying she was "dead broke" after she and former President Bill Clinton left the White House.

Calling it "a rare misstep" by the former first lady, Todd said, "Well, this is more of an example of a politician who perhaps only hangs out with millionaires and donors and feels poor by comparison. That’s what that sounded like."

He added: "That goes to one of Hillary Clinton’s potential vulnerabilities – how does she relate to an average American having been so long away from being in their shoes."

While promoting her memoir "Hard Choices," which concerns her tenure as secretary of State, Clinton told ABC’s Diane Sawyer on Monday that she and her husband faced a mountain of bills after they departed the Oval Office.

"We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt," Clinton told Sawyer.

Republicans responded by saying that Clinton is out of touch with Americans who struggle to make a living.

Hillary Clinton, who has earned $5 million in speaking fees since leaving the State Department in 2013, backtracked Tuesday while saying she and her husband were $12 million in debt from legal bills after Bill finished his second term.

"Let me just clarify that I fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans today," Clinton said on "Good Morning America." "It’s an issue that I’ve worked on and cared about my entire adult life."

When Hillary Clinton ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, she and her husband had earned a reported total of $109 million over the previous seven years.
