Former Vice President Joe Biden has a 12 point lead over President Donald Trump nationally, according to a new poll.

A Monmouth University poll released Thursday shows Biden steadily gaining support since March. Biden’s lead started out with a 3 point advantage in March that increased slightly to 4 points in April and then jumped to 9 points in May.

In a head-to-head match up, 53% of voters say they back Biden and 41% say they would reelect Trump.

Poll results show:

  • 50% of voters say they won’t vote for Trump.
  • 39% of voters say they won’t vote for Biden.
  • 40% of Biden supporters say they are certain they will vote for him.
  • 34% of Trump supporters say they are certain they will reelect him.

“Half of all registered voters have ruled out backing Trump,” Monmouth pollster Patrick Murray said. “Trump showed in 2016 that he can thread the needle, but these results suggest the president has even less room for error in 2020. He must convert some of those unlikely supporters if he is to win a second term.”

Biden is also faring better when it comes to favorability ratings. According to the poll, Biden’s favorability rating stands at 44% positive and 44% negative, while Trump’s rating is 38% positive and 55% negative.

Murray said this could be problematic for the president.

“Trump’s problem is that voters who aren’t enamored with either candidate tend to go for change,” he said.

Voters who don’t view either candidate in a positive light are going for Biden by a 55 to 21 margin, according to poll results.

And when it comes to the candidates’ mental health, Biden also comes out ahead of Trump with 52% of voters saying they are at somewhat confident Biden has the mental stamina to be president and 45% saying the same for Trump.

But Republicans are more confident in Trump’s mental health than Democrats are in Biden’s.

Seventy-two percent of Republicans say they are confident in the president’s mental and physical fitness to serve as president while only 47% of Democrats are confident about Biden’s mental and physical acuity.

The poll surveyed 867 U.S. adults between June 26 and June 30. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
