Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., is calling on President Donald Trump to rescind his endorsement of the GOP senator he is running against in a special election this year.

Trump tweeted his support of Sen. Luther Strange, R-Ala., Tuesday evening. The endorsement seemed out of the blue at first, but then it became clear that Brooks is one of several Republicans who is running against Strange in an election that will determine who replaces former Sen. Jeff Sessions, who is now serving as attorney general. Former Alabama Governor Robert J. Bentley appointed Strange to temporarily replace Sessions until a special election could be held.

Brooks fired back Wednesday afternoon by saying Strange and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell do not support the president's agenda.

Brooks later followed up with this tweet:

Brooks also released a statement earlier Wednesday that took a shot at McConnell.

"I respect President Trump, but I am baffled and disappointed Mitch McConnell and the Swamp somehow misled the president into endorsing Luther Strange," Brooks said.

The special election’s primary is scheduled for next Tuesday, while the primary runoff is penciled in for Sept. 26. The special election itself will take place Dec. 12.
