Former Massachusetts Gov. and Senate candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday he voted for his wife Ann in the 2016 presidential election.

Romney sat down with the KSL and Deseret News editorial boards and revealed his vote.

"I wrote in the name of a person who I admire deeply, who I think would be an excellent president," said Romney, a Republican who is running the seat soon to be vacated by retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. "I realized it wasn't going to go anywhere, but nonetheless felt that I was putting in a very solid name."

Romney had not previously disclosed his vote in the 2016 presidential election, only saying that he did not vote for Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Romney, who lost the 2012 presidential election to President Barack Obama, has clashed with Trump in recent years. He infamously called Trump "a phony, a fraud" during a March 2016 speech. Later that year after Trump won the election, Romney was briefly considered a contender to be named secretary of state before Trump passed him over.
