Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel, R-Ky., said Russia should not be allowed back in the Group of Seven nations.
His comments came on Wednesday during an interview with Politico's Playbook.
Asked if Russia should be readmitted to the G-7, McConnell said: "No."
Following the G-7 summit earlier this month, President Donald Trump had said: "I think it would be an asset to have Russia back in.
And he added: "I think the G-8 would be better."
Russia was ousted from the group in 2014 for annexing Crimea and supporting pro-Kremlin separatists in eastern Ukraine, The Hill noted.
Despite his opposition over the suggestion of allowing Russia back into the G-7, McConnell said he had no objections to a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I don't think there's anything wrong with meeting with him," he said. "We met with Russian leaders during the Cold War, so I have no problem with that."
