Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday said the new Democratic-majority House better consider the likely reaction to impeaching President Donald Trump, warning, “the business of presidential harassment might not work out for you too well.”
In an interview on Fox News’ “The Daily Briefing,” the Kentucky Republican called Tuesday’s midterm elections “a great day” for the GOP Senate, but said newly empowered Democrats in the House would be taking a big gamble in targeting Trump.
“In the late '90s we had control of the House and Senate” he said. “We impeached [President] Bill Clinton. His approval went up and ours went down.
“So my suggestion to the new Democratic majority in the House is: The business of presidential harassment might not work out for you too well.”
McConnell also said voters sent a message Tuesday about the contentious, bitter confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
“I do think voting against Kavanaugh was a mistake,” he said. “”Those in competitive races who voted against Kavanaugh lost. Ones who voted for him won. It was like a shot of adrenaline to our side,” he said.
“People felt Justice Kavanaugh was being treated unfairly, being presumed guilty instead of presumed innocent. We all watched the mob tactics of those who were up here chasing my members out of restaurants. It was counter-productive. It registered with the American people how important it was to continue to control the Senate right before the election.
“As unpleasant as it was to go it there, it ended up politically being a godsend for Republicans.”
