Candidates for a New Jersey seat in the House of Representatives are in a statistical dead heat, a Monmouth University poll reported Wednesday.

In the poll:

  • 40 percent support Democrat Mikie Sherill.
  • 38 percent support Republican Jay Webber.

The Democratic candidate is also in the lead, 44 percent to 40 percent, using a traditional midterm likely-voter model, but looking at a model that shows a Democratic surge in turnout, the poll shows Sherill in the lead by 6 percentage points.

"Right now this race is more about underlying partisan enthusiasm than it is about either of the two major party candidates, because, to be frank, most voters don’t know much about either one of them," Monmouth pollster Patrick Murray said in the poll report.

Sherill and Webber are competing for the open seat that Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen held for 24 years. He announced in January that he would not run for re-election, Politico reported.

The two-point difference is within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Sherill is a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, while Webber is one of the most conservative members of the New Jersey Assembly, Politico reported.

The poll was conducted from June 22 to June 25 in a random sampling of 406 potential voters in Virginia’s 10th district, the Monmouth report said.
