Rep. Meadows on Pompeo: Trump Couldn't Make a 'Better Decision'

(Fox News' "America's Newsroom")

By    |   Tuesday, 13 March 2018 02:30 PM EDT

CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who has been tagged to replace outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, has had a powerful relationship with President Donald Trump since the early days of his administration, and he'll do well with the promotion, House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows said Tuesday.

"Director Pompeo and the president have had a relationship since early days," the North Carolina Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"Really, [he was] one of the first nominees to be confirmed. That relationship was not only powerful but it was an honest and candid exchange they'd have almost on a daily basis."

Meadows said he served with Pompeo in the House of Representatives, and that he fully supports the nomination.

"It couldn't be a better decision," said Meadows. "As we go into talks with North Korea, if you're going to make a change, now's the time ... we support the president in that decision."

Meadows said he has worked with Tillerson on a number of issues, and has found him to be a "thoughtful individual that has served our country well."

"There have been some differences in terms of where this president and this administration wants to take the State Department and the engagement internationally," said Meadows. "Those differences while they may be minor in terms of scope from a foreign policy perspective, you have to be on the same agenda. I wish the secretary well. He's done a good job while he's been here and yet at the same time the reshuffling is pretty typical."

Meadows said he also agrees with Deputy CIA Director Gina Haspel's nomination to replace Pompeo as the head of the CIA.

"I can't think of a better person to step in Director Pompeo's shoes," he said. "I've actually had the opportunity to meet with her on one or two occasions. What I found is not only does she have the ability to make critical decisions at the right time, she has unbelievable institutional knowledge."

People will make a "big deal" about Haspel being the first female director of the CIA, he continued, "but it's about her brain power and intellectual understanding of the CIA and how it operates that I applaud this morning."

Meadows also discussed plans to defund security cities, commenting as Trump was heading to California for his first visit there as president.

"It's not just defying federal immigration law but, the relationship the federal government has with local law enforcement," he said.
