There is much more that needs to be done when it comes to dealing with North Korea's nuclear capabilities, but the Trump administration has the "patience and the determination" to get that done, and so does the rest of the world, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday.

However, the approach toward denuclearization is "fundamentally different than that taken through the last three presidents' negotiations, Pompeo told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell.

"The sanctions are remaining in place, and they started the global sanctions that are put in place by the entire world and the UN Security Council resolution," said Pompeo. "We have known that it will take time, and we knew that it would not happen instantaneously."

Countries from the Middle East, China, and Russia also have stated their continuing commitment to enforce the Security Council resolutions, said Pompeo, and the sanctions will remain in place until the denuclearization that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised President Donald Trump is complete.

However, it will be fully on Trump whether he agrees to Kim's call for a second summit, Pompeo commented.

"I am hopeful that I will have a chance to travel again to Pyongyang to continue the negotiations before too long, and that before too long," said Pompeo, "and then in relatively short order, I hope that the two leads get together again to continue to make progress on this the incredibly important issue for the entire world."
