Vice President Mike Pence says his historic tie-breaking vote to confirm Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was the "easiest vote I ever cast."

Speaking at DeVos's swearing-in, Pence lauded her commitment to America's children.

"Never before has a vice president been called upon to cast a tie-breaking vote for a Cabinet nominee," he said. "When I cast my first vote in the United States Senate though, I wasn't just voting for you.

"Having seen your devotion to improving the quality of education for some of our most vulnerable children across the nation, for so many years, I was also casting a vote for America's children. And I can tell you, my vote for Betsy DeVos was the easiest vote I ever cast."

Earlier Tuesday, the Senate voted 50-50 on DeVos to lead the Department of Education; Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska became the first Republican senators to oppose a Trump Cabinet pick, joining all Democrats, The Hill noted.

The last time a vice president broke a tie in the Senate was 2008, when then-Vice President Dick Cheney voted on tax legislation, according to the outlet.
