Huckabee: Cruz Changing Position on Several Issues

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

By    |   Friday, 08 January 2016 02:50 PM EST

Candidates who get their funding from corporate contributors and donors who support other candidates will answer to the people who "throw the dollars at their campaigns," GOP candidate Mike Huckabee said Friday, while accusing fellow candidate Ted Cruz of changing his position on a number of issues.

He insisted he wasn't suggesting that Cruz is lacking convictions, but told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" that the Texas Republican has changed his position on a number of issues.

"That's been pointed out by The Washington Post, The New York Times, by other campaigns and other candidates," said Huckabee, "so I don't have to be the one for that."

But at some point, the former Arkansas governor said, "I think people want you to just say the same thing wherever you are and that you don't change your message depending on what your GPS is reading."

Meanwhile, Huckabee is nearly 30 points behind Cruz in the polling with the Iowa caucuses less than a month away, but he believes he can make up the difference.

"Four years ago Rick Santorum was in low single digits five days out from the caucus. Nobody was even paying attention to him, and he ends up winning," said Huckabee. "Eight years ago nobody thought I would win, everybody was saying what kind of second place might I possibly come in, and I didn't just win, but I have to this day the record for the most votes of any person ever competing in the Iowa caucuses. Iowa voters, they decide late. And people who don't think they do have not read history very carefully and looked at the caucuses. I say they date everybody in the field, but they don't put a ring on it until wedding day."

Also on Friday, Huckabee, like many other candidates complained that the United States is not leading in the world under the Obama administration.

"It's almost like that while the beaches are being stormed, President Obama's building sand castles, and he ignores the fact that we are absolutely under attack," said Huckabee. "We've underestimated the threat that the Iranians pose to us and how dangerous it is that we've entered into this agreement. These people are not interested in just carving out a little additional real estate. They see their role as bringing about the end of the world, and they're doing everything they can to hasten to that moment."
