Huckabee: Spying on Members of Congress 'An Impeachable Offense'

Fox News

If President Barack Obama knew communications with Congress were also swept up in the NSA's reported spying on Israel, it's cause for impeachment, according to GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee.

In an interview with Fox News, the former Arkansas governor slammed the alleged snooping of one government agency on another.

"The real issue is whether or not the president was aware that members of Congress were being tapped," Huckabee said. "If that's the case, and the president was aware of it… I believe that this is not only unconstitutional, I believe this is an impeachable offense.

Huckabee noted former president Richard Nixon "resigned for less than this."

"I don't think we can just gloss this over," he said. "This is a serious issue when one branch of government spies on another branch."

House Intelligence Committee Chairman David Nunes says his panel intends to look into the spying, first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Huckabee said Wednesday if the executive branch spied on members of Congress, Obama "should either resign or the Congress ought to have the guts to go after him."
