More Than 15 Million Have Already Cast Ballots in Midterms

By    |   Thursday, 27 October 2022 03:26 PM EDT

The election is still almost two weeks away, but more than 15 million people have already cast their ballots through early voting, according to the United States Elections Project, which is now tracking activity in 41 states.

About 10 million of the votes were done through mailed-in ballots, with just under 5 million being cast in person, according to the project, managed by University of Florida professor Michael McDonald.

The numbers come as voting in some states has already gone past levels seen at the same point in the midterm elections in the last midterms, held in 2018, reports The Hill.

This includes Georgia, where more than one million had cast ballots as of earlier this week.

"Congratulations, Georgia voters! We’ve reached 1 MILLION cast votes. Election officials deserve our thanks for rising to the challenge & working hard to serve our communities," Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, wrote on his Twitter page Tuesday.

In Georgia, Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock is squaring off against GOP challenger Herschel Walker in a race that could determine if Republicans will gain control of the Senate, while Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, is facing Democrat challenger Stacey Abrams in a rematch from 2018 when he defeated her in a hotly contested race.

Meanwhile, in Florida, residents have cast more than 1.8 million early ballots, or the most in any state, the Elections Project report shows.

Democrats seem to be embracing early voting more, with the report showing that 48% of early ballots in 21 states reporting data by party registration came from registered Democrats, and 31.2% came from Republicans.

However, that doesn't necessarily suggest an early win by Democrats, as some Republicans are urging voters to wait until Nov. 8 and cast their ballots on Election Day.
