The election of Democrat Jared Golden to represent Maine in the House of Representatives means the entire New England region is blue on Capitol Hill, with the exception of Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

As Axios pointed out, Golden was declared the winner in the midterm race to represent Maine's 2nd congressional district on Thursday. The triumph gives Democrats sole control in the House when it comes to the five New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

Here's the breakdown of each state's representation in the House:

  • Connecticut: Five Democrats
  • Maine: Two Democrats
  • Massachusetts: Nine Democrats
  • New Hampshire: Two Democrats
  • Rhode Island: Two Democrats

Maine was the left's only pickup in New England, as Golden defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin.

The Portland Press Herald reported Thursday that Golden garnered 139,231 to Poliquin's 136,326, which equaled a 50.5 percent to 49.5 percent victory.

Collins gained national attention in October when she voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is rumored to be mulling a presidential run in 2020.
