Schoen: Romney ‘Avoided Disaster,’ Gained Little Momentum

By    |   Wednesday, 29 February 2012 01:39 AM EST

Political analyst and Democratic pollster Doug Schoen tells Newsmax that Mitt Romney may have “avoided a disaster” in his home state of Michigan, but did little to generate momentum heading into the all-important Super Tuesday contests.

“If, in his own state, he’s only winning by five points or thereabouts, it says that this race is not over by a long shot,” Schoen said in an exclusive interview Tuesday night.

The fact that Romney scored double victories in both Michigan and Arizona is obscured by the former Massachusetts’ governor's narrow victory in a state where he was born and where his father served as governor, Schoen said.

“It doesn’t slow him down but it doesn’t do much for Governor Romney. It doesn’t do much at all,” according to Schoen.

He said voters are waiting for Romney to articulate a positive vision for the country.

“And the absence of a positive vision makes this another night where Barack Obama was at least as big a victor as Mitt Romney,” Schoen said, adding that 37 percent of Michigan Republicans are not convinced that they will vote for the GOP nominee in the general election.
