Michael Waltz to Newsmax TV: Relief Bill Must Focus on Small Businesses

(Newsmax TV/"The National Report")

Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., told Newsmax TV on Monday that the next congressional relief bill addressing the coronavirus outbreak must by “focused on small businesses.”

Waltz, on “The National Report,” said that the next phase of relief funding should be “focused on small businesses. We appropriated $350 billion for that program, in just a week the Treasury is saying it authorized $170 billion out of that, and it’s due to run out by the end of this week.”

He said later, “even though there have been big hurdles, there have been stumbles in the program, clearly the money is moving, and we need to replenish it and just focus on that.”

Waltz said that “this isn’t the time for political agendas,” saying that “there will be time for all of the other things that everybody wants to get in” later.

“I’m really focused on how small businesses will restart again, and kind of a kick-start-like program that will help them with the liquidity and the capital they need to kind of prime the pump and get their businesses up and running again.”

He added that forcing businesses to provide sick or emergency leave pay is an “additional mandate on businesses that are just trying to stay alive, they’re trying through the paycheck protection program to keep people on their payrolls, and yet you’re adding additional mandates.

Waltz said, “This isn’t the time for that, let’s keep people on company payroll, not unemployment payroll, and that’s what we should be focused on going forward.”
