Former New York Republican congressman Michael Grimm announced on Sunday he was running to regain the House seat he left after pleading guilty to tax evasion in 2015, The Hill reported Sunday.

Grimm, who is running for New York's 11th Congressional District seat that includes Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, was jailed for eight months in a federal prison. He has been released for more than a year.

"I have matured. I'm tempered. I'm wiser. But I'm still the same guy you know yearning to serve you every chance I get," Grimm said Sunday.

Grimm will be running against Republican Rep. Dan Donovan, who won a special election to fill the seat after his resignation. Grimm explained his time in prison gave him time for reflection.

"I've had a lot of time to reflect and for introspection. I'm truly sorry if I let any of you down," Grimm said on Sunday. "I feel like I let your voice be abruptly taken away from you when I resigned. From the very bottom of my heart, I am sorry and I do love you."

Prosecutors at the time maintained Grimm failed to report $1 million in earnings from a restaurant business he co-owned.

Grimm, who has stressed his support for President Donald Trump, explained he would "go to Washington and have our president's back."
