Former national security adviser Michael Flynn, during a call-in to Rush Limbaugh's radio program, said a U.S. appeals court decision to order a federal judge to drop the government's criminal case against him is good not only for him and his family, but also for the country.
"It's really a great boost of confidence for the American people and our justice system because that’s what this really comes down to, is whether or not our justice system is going to have the confidence of the American people," Flynn told Limbaugh Wednesday, shortly after the ruling was announced.
The retired lieutenant general added that he's always fought for the rule of law, and that "we have to make it work whether we like it or not, and it has to work with the right people and the right leaders and the people of our country to step up to the plate."
On Wednesday, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in a 2-1 decision, in favor of Flynn and the Trump administration to prevent U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan from exercising his discretion on whether to grant the department's motion to clear Flynn, who twice pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
Even with the ruling, the matter "will never end," Flynn told Limbaugh.
"We're a country that’s an experiment based on some great ideas from some terrific, you know, founding citizens of our country, so it’s never over," Flynn said. "I do not expect it to be over. You know, this is another — this is a phase that has ended. And we will go into another phase."
Meanwhile, Sullivan did not immediately dismiss the case, and the full appeals court can still review the matter. Instead, Sullivan has suspended a July 16 hearing and deadlines for more briefs, meaning he's either waiting to see what the full court does or that he's studying his options, reports the New York Times.
