Claims by former Donald Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo that a second government informant may have tried to spy on the president's 2016 campaign are being challenged, Fox News is reporting.

Caputo made the claim in two televised interviews with Fox News.

Caputo, in an interview with Neil Cavuto, said he was approached in May 2016 by an intermediary "who had been talking to a government official" looking to connect with the campaign. The official was purportedly looking to hand off Hillary Clinton-related emails, Fox reported.

But the individual, who supplied the information to the intermediary, is a government contractor who told Fox News the interaction was just "cocktail party talk about where to go do opposition research."

And the individual denied being connected to any intelligence agencies.

Meanwhile, the intermediary in the case confirmed to Fox News about being approached at a Washington party and being pushed to "go after the Hillary emails."

Caputo told The Daily Wire he had previously reported the intermediary's approach to him to the committees investigating Russia's meddling in the election.

"(The committees) didn't check on it," Caputo said. "So, I gave it to the media."

And he conceded: "This (the incident) also could be a great big misunderstanding."
