Nine-term congressman and doctor Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas, told Newsmax TV that those calling for the end of coronavirus lockdown restrictions and others protesting a black man's death in police custody are "testing the boundaries" with regard to COVID-19 risks.
Burgess, a 69-year-old Republican who has three decades as a doctor in North Texas and represents Texas' 26th Congressional District in the northern section of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, did not consider it wise when government officials expressed comfort with regard to protests over the death of George Floyd.
"I think some of the other statements made as far as abandoning of social distancing during protests, I don't know if that's really good advice," Burgess told Wednesday's "Spicer & Co." "After all, social distancing is the one thing that we know that works if you really do want to flatten the curve and prevent a surge in over use of hospitalizations and ICU beds."
Burgess said he believes the protesters and those calling for the end to restrictions were risking public health.
"It is clear that there are people who are testing the boundaries, both people who say: 'Look, I'm sick of being shut in'; and people who say: 'I've got an important protest to conduct.'
"So, I guess, in a way, we're seeing an interesting juxtaposition of experimental data and perhaps some smart person will tell us at the end of it what the right answer was."
