Utah Republican Rep. Mia Love on Thursday demanded President Donald Trump apologize for his reference to some immigrants coming from Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations.

"The president's comments are unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation's values," Love, 42, whose parents came from Haiti in 1973, said via Twitter. "This behavior is unacceptable from the leader of our nation."

The Washington Post, citing two unnamed sources briefed on a bipartisan meeting on immigration, reported President Trump grew frustrated as lawmakers floated the idea of restoring protections for immigrants from Africa, El Salvador, and Haiti.

"Why are we having all these people from s**thole countries come here?" Trump said, according to the Post, referring to the African countries and Haiti.

Love, born in New York City to parents who are now naturalized U.S. citizens, said: "My parents came from one of those countries but proudly took an oath of allegiance to the United States and took on the responsibilities of everything that being a citizen comes with.

"They never took a thing from our federal government," she continued. "They worked hard, paid taxes, and rose from nothing to take care of and provide opportunities for their children.

"They taught their children to do the same," said Love, who moved to Utah in 1998. "That's the American dream.

"The president must apologize to both the American people and the nations he so wantonly maligned."
