Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the newly elected president of Mexico, thanked President Donald Trump on Monday for his congratulatory tweet.
Lopez Obrador said the tweet was "very respectful" during an interview with Televisa news network, The Associated Press reported via The Chicago Tribune.
"This is what we always want to maintain with the U.S. government, that there be mutual respect," the president-elect said in the interview.
Trump on Monday, tweeted:
"We are never going to disrespect the U.S. government, because we want them to respect us… at the appropriate moment, we are going to get in touch, to reach an understanding" with the Trump administration, Lopez Obrador said in the interview.
Obrador won with between 53 percent and 53.8 percent of the vote.
