The campaign of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Friday that his primary opponent Matt Bevin may have committed a misdemeanor in his business dealings.
The accusation stems from a
BuzzFeed story showing that Bevin neglected to report a tax lien when applying for a Connecticut state grant after his bell company's factory was destroyed in a fire.
McConnell’s campaign issued a summary of the situation Friday, saying that "under Connecticut law, Mr. Bevin may be guilty of a class A misdemeanor, which could result in up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine,"
The Hill reports.
In a conference call, McConnell's campaign included a Connecticut lawyer to get across the message that Bevin might have broken the law, according to the newspaper.
"Now, I am not a prosecutor, I am not a judge, and I am not a jury. But if I was Mr. Bevin’s attorney, I would be very concerned," said the lawyer Peter Martin, The Hill reports.
Bevin offered a blunt response to the McConnell camp's charges.
"Quite frankly this is a shameful display unbecoming of the senior senator from Kentucky, and his attempts to distract voters from his liberal record are beyond desperate," Bevin said in a statement, according to The Hill.
