Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said President Joe Biden will not be impeached and removed from office over how the Afghanistan withdrawal was handled, noting that the Democrats control the House and Senate,.
The Kentucky Republican made his remarks during an event in Pikeville, Kentucky, on Wednesday, according to Fox News.
"The president is not going to be removed from office," McConnell said. "It’s a Democratic House, a narrowly Democratic Senate, that’s not going to happen.
"I think the American people have to decide what kind of government they want. I have a feeling the American people didn’t think they voted for this government."
A video clip of McConnell’s remarks was tweeted out by Forbes’ senior reporter Andrew Solender.
The swift Taliban takeover in Afghanistan and Biden's unconditional withdrawal is a "dereliction of duty" and should lead to Biden’s impeachment, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., had told Newsmax on Aug. 24.
"I think he should be impeached," Graham said. "This is the most dishonorable thing a commander in chief has done, maybe, in modern times. Joe Biden, for political reasons, wanted to pull all of our troops out because of the polling numbers, and what has he done?
"He's created the conditions for another 9/11. He's abandoned thousands of people who honorably and bravely fought along with us, and how do you win this war over time if you have nobody to help you over there? How do you keep it from our shores if all of us are here."
GOP Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee are demanding that Biden resign.
Blackburn had said Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris should "resign or face impeachment and removal from office."
Hawley said, "It is now painfully clear (Biden) has neither the will nor the capacity to lead. He must resign."
Fox News noted that others have also called for impeachment or Biden’s resignation, including Reps. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, Byron Donalds, R-Fla., Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., and Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.
