Sen. John McCain says he called Australian Ambassador to the United States Joe Hockey to show support for the long alliance between Australia and America following President Donald Trump's heated conversation with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
"I called Australia's Ambassador to the United States this morning to express my unwavering support for the U.S.-Australia alliance," the Arizona Republican, who's frequently criticized Trump, said in a statement, according to The Hill.
McCain also said he asked Hockey to "convey" to Australians that Americans value the alliance.
"[We] honor the sacrifice of the Australians who have served and are serving by our side, and remain committed to the safer, freer, and better world that Australia does far more than its fair share to protect and promote," the Arizona Republican said.
Last weekend, Trump had an abbreviated conversation with Turnbull, ending after 25 minutes what was supposed to be an hour-long chat, according to The Washington Post.
Senior U.S. officials told the newspaper that Trump ripped Turnbull over a refugee agreement and bragged about his Electoral College win.
