Many mayors feel President Barack Obama has ignored their concerns. And they hope that former White House chief of staff
Rahm Emanuel, elected mayor of Chicago Tuesday, can carry their banner to the White House,
The Hill reports.
The mayors are particularly upset about budget cuts proposed by Obama. "After years in Congress [Emanuel was formerly a congressman] and especially after getting to know the president on a personal level as his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel will, no question, be an invaluable member of our conference,” Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter told The Hill. He was referring to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which includes mayors of cities with populations of 30,000 or more.
"He definitely understands the issues that we face, particularly improving infrastructure in cities, which is where all of the jobs are,” says Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.
