The American Medical Association has told Defense Secretary Jim Mattis there is "no valid reason" to exclude transgender troops, the Washington Examiner is reporting.

The AMA’s comments came in a letter to Mattis from James Madara, the AMA’s chief executive officer.

"We believe there is no medically valid reason — including a diagnosis of gender dysphoria — to exclude transgender individuals from military service," Madara said.

He added the Pentagon and White House have "mischaracterized and rejected the wide body of peer-reviewed research on the effectiveness of transgender medical care."

Trump signed a memorandum last month that said transgender individuals with a history of "gender dysphoria," which was defined as "those who may require substantial medical treatment, including through medical drugs or surgery," are disqualified from military service "except under certain limited circumstances."

The policy adopted recommendations from Mattis.

But the Examiner noted the policy, which has already been questioned by the American Psychiatric Association and American Psychological Association, is now on hold due to challenges in federal court.
