Former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker told Newsmax on Wednesday that the ongoing legal cases against former President Donald Trump "don't impact the support" from many voters.
Whitaker said on "Wake Up America" in an interview that "a lot of people just don't care about these legal cases" against Trump.
He added: "At the end of the day, they're picking a president … their job is to determine who could do the job the best, and I think, you know, the polls are showing very clearly that at least in the early states, that Donald Trump is very popular."
Trump maintains a sizable lead in national polls of the 2024 Republican presidential primary candidates, winning more than 50% support on average while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is the only other candidate who garners more than 10% support on average, according to both FiveThirtyEight and RealClearPolitics.
Whitaker said on Wednesday that the legal cases against Trump, who has been sued in New York and indicted in Georgia, Florida, Manhattan, and Washington, D.C., "don't impact the support from a lot of folks."
He went on to say that "this is the left's strategy since they can't beat him at the ballot box, they're going to try to beat him down with legal process and it's really a shame that this is what it has come to."
Whitaker added, "At the end of the day, you know, based on what I know about Donald Trump and how I see him, you know he's going to fight through all these things like he does everything else."
