A probe into Rep. Matt Gaetz’s tweet about Michael Cohen, the former attorney for President Donald Trump, will proceed by the Florida Bar, the Tampa Bay Times is reporting.
The Bar’s Grievance Committee will decide if the Florida Republican, who is licensed to practice law in the state, will face disciplinary action for allegedly intimidating Cohen, according to the newspaper.
In moving ahead with the case, the board indicated its initial review of the matter determined that the allegations against Gaetz would, if shown to be true, violate the state rules for lawyers, the newspaper said.
The probe centers around a tweet Gaetz sent questioning Cohen’s faithfulness to his wife. It came a day before Cohen’s scheduled appearance before the House Oversight Committee in February.
The tweet, now deleted, called out Cohen, and asked: “Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot…”
Gaetz "remains confident that the Florida Bar will not impair his vigorous and successful representation of his district,” spokeswoman Jillian Lane Wyant said.
