Democratic presidential underdog Martin O'Malley — eclipsed in the polls by front-running Hillary Clinton — says he's got "zero interest" in a Cabinet job and plans to stick to the road he's chosen for the White House.

On the stump in Burlington, Iowa, the former Maryland governor, whose campaign has focused on reshaping foreign policy, battling climate change and championing illegal immigrants, bristled at the Des Moines Register's assessment of him as "better suited to a Cabinet-level job in a Clinton White House."

O'Malley responded he has "zero interest," the USA Today reports

"No interest in being a Cabinet member," he said. "There's a much easier path to that than the path I've chosen . . . I intend to win."

"My family and I put everything on the line here in order to give you a choice, because I refused to believe that this process was ordained from the outset," he told a crowd later, the Register reports.

"If you lift up a new leader on caucus night, if you help me beat expectations, if you help me reach threshold or beyond, we can change our nation's politics."

His determination hit a chord with some voters, the Register reports.

"I want a president I can trust, who says what he says and means what he says," Jan Carey said of the candidate. "And that's how Mr. O'Malley comes across."
