Arizona Sen. Martha McSally is catching up to her challenger, former astronaut Mark Kelly, according to a new poll.

An Arizona Public Opinion Pulse poll released Tuesday indicates the Republican lawmaker is still trailing her Democrat opponent, but by a smaller margin.

Poll results show:

  • 48% of likely Arizona voters say they want to see Kelly serve as senator.
  • 43% of likely Arizona voters say they back McSally for office.
  • 47% of independent voters in Arizona say they will vote for Kelly.
  • 34% of Arizona’s independent voters say they will support McSally.

According to the poll results, Kelly's support from likely voters is down 4 percentage points since last month.

The Hill reports that nearly every recent public poll released on the race shows McSally trailing behind Kelly.

But, according to the recent survey, which was conducted by Phoenix-based firm OH Predictive Insights, McSally is improving her odds as the election nears.

Jacob Joss, a data analyst at OH Predictive Insights, told The Hill that McSally may be able to retain her seat if she can drum up more support from independent voters. In July, there was a 27-point spread in who independent voters said they were voting for with Kelly in the lead. That has decreased to a 13-percentage point difference, according to the latest poll results.

“If McSally continues on her current flight path, she has a shot at winning this election,” Joss said.

Democrats have their eye on flipping McSally’s seat this year. Kelly has more than double the amount of cash on hand than McSally, according to recent campaign finance reports.

The survey polled 603 likely Arizona voters between Aug. 3-4. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
