Rep. Blackburn: Time for GOP to Take Government Spending Seriously

(Fox Business/"Mornings with Maria")

By    |   Monday, 19 March 2018 11:24 AM EDT

Rep. Marsha Blackburn Monday called on members of her party to get serious about government spending, calling it a "generational issue and a moral issue."

"I'm trying to get us to put the balance the budget amendment on the floor for a vote because we have not done that in the past three or four years," the Tennessee Republican, who is seeking outgoing Sen. Bob Corker's seat, told Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria."

"That's where you get to the point that you can begin to claw back some of this spending."

According to the U.S. Treasury, the national debt went over $21 trillion last week for the first time. It hit $20 trillion in early September.

Blackburn said she believes efforts to rein in budget spending should begin by giving control over Medicaid back to the states.

"As somebody who continues to offer across the board spending cuts for discretionary spending, who says let's take these steps, as you look at entitlements and send Medicaid back to the states. What a great first step that would be in order to begin to get our arms around the spending outlays," she told Bartiromo.

"I've got to tell you, there is a lot of waste in discretionary spending still," Blackburn also said. "When you look at the budgets for these agencies can you see it. We do a lot of oversight on this in the House and we would welcome having the Senate pick up their pace and do some of this with. . . we did every appropriations bill last year they didn't get done in the Senate."
