Rep. Blackburn: Dems Need to Learn Why They Lost Election

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

Members of the Democratic Party must stop blaming alleged Russian hacking and learn why their party lost the election, according to Rep. Marsha Blackburn.

"They need to start learning why they lost. They completely misread the American people, they were out of step and they had a candidate that the American people did not like and did not want to vote for, " the Tennessee Republican said, referring to Hillary Clinton, during an appearance Thursday on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

Blackburn rejected the Democrats' blaming their loss on Russian hacks. "I think that is another justification in their long list of justifications of why they lost," she said.

It is important to find out whether Russia meddled in the election, Blackburn said. "We know that they have not been our friend for a long time. We know we need a better relationship with them. Everybody wants to know what they were doing."

According to Blackburn, regardless of whether the Russians hacked Democrats' emails, they were not responsible for the content of them. "One thing that you can't deny — they say, 'well, there were all the emails, and the Russians were behind the hacks.' No, the Russians didn't make these individuals write these words in those emails."

An investigation into the situation will be conducted properly, she said. "This story is going to end how it ought to end. The House, Chairman [Devin] Nunes has said, they're going to get their investigation. They're trying to find out why there is a different opinion between different agencies. They're frustrated with the lack of a briefing.

"What we have to realize is this will go through regular order and through proper channels to get to the bottom of what has or has not happened. It also will hopefully lead us to appropriate legislation for data security, increased cybersecurity, and putting in place the safeguards that Americans need."

Later in the interview, Blackburn addressed whether she believed Obamacare would be successfully repealed. She said Democrats would work with Republicans on the plan.

"I think you're going to see Democrats work with us to both repeal and put in place a workable healthcare system for insurance, for healthcare delivery, for healthcare access and for appropriate healthcare payment to providers. And all of those components are going to have to work together.

"We have to get it repealed, give the market time to begin its adjustment period, get a product into that marketplace that is something people are going to afford."

Democrats have expressed interest in her plan to open up the health insurance marketplace by allowing purchase across state lines. "They're looking forward to supporting that," she said.

Americans want the economy to improve, according to the congresswoman. "They want the Trump bump that they're seeing in the economy right now to become the Trump economy, and they want to see this long term," she said. "People are tired of wage stagnation. They are tired of not having more money at the end of the month. They want more money in that paycheck, and they are ready to get the wheels turning on this economy."
