Retired astronaut Mark Kelly raised more than $1 million in the first two days of his Senate campaign, it was confirmed Thursday.
Kelly, a Democrat, announced Tuesday he is running for the seat formerly held by the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Sen. Martha McSally currently occupies the seat after she was appointed in December, but the state will hold an election in 2020 to determine who serves the final two years of McCain's six-year term.
According to Arizona Central, Kelly's campaign has taken in $1.1 million. It raised $604,000 in the first 24 hours alone.
Kelly is married to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who survived a 2011 assassination attempt during an official event near Tucson, Arizona. The couple has since become fierce gun control advocates.
Kelly has never held elected office. A retired Navy captain, he flew combat missions from an aircraft carrier during the first Gulf War before becoming an astronaut along with his twin brother Scott. He flew four space missions between 2001 and 2011.
